OVERVIEW The fact that smoke detectors need testing is now relatively well understood. The question is what tests are required and what should be used to accomplish them properly? Testing requirements may be divided between those performed in the field (by specialist contractors or by fire system owners) and those accomplished in the lab or factory (by detector designers, detector manufacturers or by third party test houses).   Functional (or operational) Testing Functional checking, with a non measured source of stimulus is required by all national standards around the world. It involves the introduction of a smoke, or simulated smoke, stimulus through the vents of a detector to the sensor.   Calibration (or sensitivity) Testing Sensitivity testing ascertains not only whether, but at what point, the detector responds to smoke. It is a quantitative test. MULTI SENSOR TESTING Today’s challenge Multi sensor detectors (or multi criteria detectors or combination detectors) comprise, two or more sensing technologies – usually smoke, heat and CO (though others are possible) and which may be configured to use that technology independently from the other technology(ies), or interdependently including those that enhance a given technology by utilizing another.   Multi sensor detectors may respond to a functional test from a single phenomenon (smoke . heat or CO) but a single phenomenon test is not necessarily an adequate test 'in the field' for this type of detector. Each of the detection principles present within the detector (e.g.: smoke / heat / CO) needs to be individually tested for the specific detection principle on which detection might rely.   With individual testing the time and cost implications increase.
